Dating back to the beginning of last century, Adlershof was originally an aircraft engine research and development base – and later the birthplace of the German aerospace industry. During the Second World War, it became a military science and technology R&D base. Following that, Adlershof experienced the Great Depression for three decades, leading to poor security conditions, polluted groundwater, and the relocation of enterprises and residents. After the unification of East and West Germany, the Berlin government funded and entrusted a state-owned enterprise to implement reconstruction and management of the park. In 1991, the Science and Technology Park began to pursue the incubator strategy and create an innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem. The same year, the German Federal Government decided to relocate the Department of Applied Science of HU Berlin to the park in order to improve innovation capabilities in the region. In 1993, the park was officially identified by the federal government as a development zone and renamed Science and Technology Park Berlin Adlershof. On account of this, the park was re-planned and re-built and many old buildings began to be renovated. As planned, it is currently comprised of nine functional groups, including the Science Park Technology Zone, Industrial Park, Commercial Business Zone, Media Industrial Zone, University, Residential Zone, and Park Area.

The success of Science and Technology Park Berlin Adlershof is thanks in no small part to the following factors:

1.By implementing a “Great Park” strategy, the science and technology park is not an industrial park in a traditional sense, but a high-tech park incorporating scientific research and industry. The industrial focus is not only on high-tech enterprises, but also on the media and education industries. There are also some 170 media companies other than high-tech enterprises accounting for 60% of the total enterprises as well as research institutions. The park actually builds an ecosystem that blends skills and technologies from different fields together to inspire innovation and create new businesses, which further promotes the development and prosperity of the region.

2.Professional management and service: the park is managed by a specialized company, and there are different types of companies to provide a full range of help and advice for the establishment of enterprises. To effectively improve the ability of external services, the park has established a think tank management data platform, which inputs the information on important enterprises, social organizations, research institutes and their people into the platform. WISTA-Management GmbH is responsible to develop and operate the Science and Technology Park Berlin Adlershof, while IGZ and OWZ provide a range of support and services for the creation of companies. Founded in 1991, IGZ provides services including consulting, infrastructure and rental housing for business founders and innovative and technology-based start-ups. Established in 1997, OWZ delivers services, including serving as a bridge to connect companies, assisting them in new market development, and related corporate approval and registration consultation, to companies from all over the world (mainly Central and Eastern Europe) who want to invest and develop in Berlin. In the park, the East-West Cooperation Center was established in 1997, becoming the first entrepreneurial center in Germany to serve Eastern and Western European businesses. What’s more, there are various activities held frequently to strengthen exchanges among workers in the park.

3.Park incubator: Science and Technology Park Berlin Adlershof is home to three business incubators that are all at full capacity currently, providing technical support, office meeting services, financing platforms, and other services for start-ups, and. For college students' entrepreneurship: incubators are open to college students completely for free; for start-ups: incubators have set up public laboratories and office spaces shared by multiple enterprises, all of which are cheap in rents so as to help startups from humble beginnings address the issues of shortage of funds and difficulty to afford experimental materials and equipment. The park has even set up Welcome Package to attract start-ups to seek for development. For experienced companies, incubators focus on addressing practical issues such as finance and human resources, and even helping them find customers and developing partners.

4.Energy conservation and environmental protection: Adlershof was rated by the public as the smartest neighborhood community in Berlin because of, to a large part, its focus on building energy efficiency, renewable energy utilization and ecological environment protection. The park is implementing the Berlin Adlershof 2020 Energy Strategy, which will become a typical model park for Germany to break away from nuclear energy and fossil energy and carry out energy transformation. The green label of the park has won a large number of customers in the new energy domain.
